Recording broadcast TV is easy. Recording it in a way that's useful two years later is a different problem. A folder full of video files, named inconsistently, with no reliable way to know what aired when or on which channel, isn't research infrastructure. It's a storage cost with no return.

When a question comes up (what did a specific network say about a sector three years ago, or how a term's usage on air has shifted over time) the team searches the archive directly instead of trying to remember which folder something might be in. The video, the transcript, and the metadata all come back together, already aligned.
"It changed what kind of questions we're willing to ask," the researcher said. "When digging something up used to take an afternoon, you didn't bother. Now it's a search. So we actually go back and check things we would've just guessed at before."
Why it matters
