How did you find SnapStream? 

I’m originally from Houston, but I recently came back to be closer to my family after working in San Francisco. I wasn’t looking to leave, but I was researching interesting tech companies in Houston and SnapStream came up on a best places to work list. I stumbled upon SnapStream and was intrigued as I had worked in TV post-production before. I happened to be a part of a Houston product management Slack channel, and I saw a friend of Rakesh’s (SnapStream's CEO) post about SnapStream’s need for a product manager, so I applied! I’ve always been a big fan of The Daily Show, and I remember hearing an interview with Jon Stewart where he was asked how the show was made. He talked about how they had people watch tapes all night long. He called them the mole people and joked that they would be free one day. When I was applying for SnapStream’s position, I was emailing Rakesh and had asked, “Are you guys the ones who freed the mole people?” Turns out, yes! 

How have you grown with SnapStream?

As a recent addition to the team, I have been able to quickly grow out of the initial job description and work a lot more on figuring out product strategy from a broader perspective. We’re thinking about where the company will be in 6 - 12 months and beyond, what does the business look like and what are the business models associated with it. These are all things I wanted to work on and thought I would eventually get to, but I’m happy I’ve been able to step into this quickly as I don’t think I would be able to do this at another company. I’ve looked at some other companies that were looking for a product manager to do maybe five specific things, but SnapStream had more room to grow. I’m really glad to have the opportunity to become more strategic than I initially thought would be required. 

What is your favorite thing about SnapStream?

I like the smaller company size and close-knit feel of the company. I have been looking for a smaller company as I’ve previously worked in the Silicon Valley tech world. We came back to Houston not only for family, but for cheaper living and to slow down a bit. Our lives in the Bay Area were consumed by work, everyone there is in tech and that’s just your life. It’s cool to be in Houston where everyone is in a different field. The people here at SnapStream have various backgrounds and a diverse set of interests. I think our people are pretty awesome.

What do you like to do when you aren’t at SnapStream?

I’ve always been a writer, even though I haven’t been able to do as much since becoming a dad. I also did some stand-up and improv. I’ve recently become pretty politically involved and volunteered a lot when I was living in San Francisco. I canvassed for congressional candidates in neighboring districts and was a part of a group that would organize bus trips to send canvassers from San Francisco to Nevada. I definitely want to continue to volunteer and help politically.

How did you find SnapStream? 

I was looking for an opportunity that would be a good fit for me and when networking with friends, someone suggested I look at SnapStream. I went to the SnapStream website and started to learn more once I saw there was an opening in Sales. As someone who watches Stephen Colbert and The Daily Show, I thought to myself, “Oh, this is how they do it!”. Snapstream was intriguing as it is different from my previous experience in IT security, but still in technology. The interesting products and the company’s family feel is what really drew me in. 

What is your role here?

How have you grown with SnapStream? 

I have worked the full gamut in sales (my first role was as an SDR) and am grateful to have worked for some great companies prior to joining SnapStream at the start of the year. Working at SnapStream, I’ve grown to understand a whole other side of what happens behind the scenes of TV shows, sports teams, and corporate brands. Learning more about the TV landscape in terms of broadcasting and compliance has been really interesting as there are different protocols organizations have to adhere to. I enjoy seeing how customers use our solutions and sift through the vast amounts of TV and news to do what they do. It’s also exciting to be a part of an organization that works hard to stay relevant with their customers’ evolving needs. I've worked for other growing companies, but SnapStream's encouragement of open collaboration and communication across different departments like Marketing, Engineering, etc. is rare to find. There's an organic growth and team atmosphere to SnapStream that's really exciting.

What is your favorite thing about SnapStream?

Even though we are working from home due to COVID-19, our team camaraderie has continued thanks in part to SnapStream’s culture of collaboration. Feedback is encouraged across departments with constant communication between Sales and Marketing and our other groups like Engineering and Product Management. We welcome that same feedback from our customers as well to better understand their needs and review how it can fit into our product roadmap. SnapStream has gone beyond just being a workplace and has created a family atmosphere of employee engagement with a work hard, play hard attitude. Leaders from all departments check in periodically to ensure that everyone is heard and valued as we work remotely. As a recent addition to this team, it has been awesome to receive so much support throughout the COVID-19 situation.

What do you like to do when you aren’t at SnapStream?

My wife and I are always chasing our kids around or taking them to and from their various activities. My daughter (9 years) is a competitive dancer and plays soccer. My son (8 years) plays baseball (which I am an assistant coach for) and flag football. When there is a break in activities, I enjoy hanging out with family & friends, golfing, and doing some work around the house.

Howdy and welcome to Feature Friday! Keep reading to get to know one of our favorite cat lovers, Katie:

How did you find SnapStream?

I found the job listing on Indeed. Since I was a nanny before this position, I was used to juggling a lot of different things at once and I knew I would be successful here. Once I heard back from SnapStream about having an interview, I read the reviews from employees and browsed our website, and I had a really good feeling about the position. I saw all of the pictures of SnapStream employees having fun and how comfortable everyone looked. I got the call inviting me to an in-person interview when I was watching a 14-month-old, and after I interviewed, I was hired the same week. I wasn’t entirely aware of how casual the office was, so I ran to get work clothes for my first day! 

What is your role here?

How have you grown with SnapStream?

I’ve honestly received more opportunities to grow here. When I first started, I was doing more of the personal assistant tasks, but I quickly started planning our user conference in NYC in 2018. It was kind of like going from out of the frying pan into the fire! I worked on finding vendors for swag, planning the whole conference, and catering. It was a really exciting experience planning and traveling to NYC less than a month after being hired, I had never been given the opportunity to travel like that before. I felt like the company was taking me seriously early on. 

What is your favorite thing about SnapStream?

The people! Everyone is super fun and I genuinely enjoy being around them, it’s fun to connect with everyone after hours too. I love hearing about the cool stuff that everyone is doing inside and outside of work, we are truly a colorful and interesting group. 

What do you like to do when you aren’t at SnapStream?

I spend a lot of time playing and going on long walks with my one-year-old son. I’ve learned babywearing and how to wrap him on my back. I mean, I’ve read tons of parenting books so I’m basically an expert now! I’m also working on perfecting my buttermilk biscuit recipe and I’m a proud pet mom. I have two cats, Percy and Severus, and my dog Faina (aka Sissy).

Welcome to another Feature Friday! This week, get to know our escape artist in support: 

How did you find SnapStream?

I was referred to the company. Someone I used to work with started at SnapStream, and they let me know about a job opening here. I really liked what I saw online and immediately knew I would be a good fit. When I walked into the office for my interview, I saw the lego wall and nerf guns and thought… is this real, does everyone play with this stuff? During my interview, I was asked if I like to drink beer on Fridays, which was a huge culture shock from my previous experiences. I watched current employees walk by and saw people in casual dress. As someone who works in support, I didn’t want to be in a suit and tie all day. I knew SnapStream was gonna be fun. 

What is your role here?

Technical Support

How have you grown with SnapStream?

Technically speaking, I’ve grown in my ability to understand more about hardware. Before SnapStream, I had always been a software guy. I can now build my own computers at home and I’ve gained a lot of knowledge outside of my comfort zone. I also feel that my position has grown with the company, which has made me feel more valuable. I mean, I’m awesome already, but it helps to have strong comradery with everyone here. I’ve grown emotionally by connecting with my team. I feel like I have the ability to phone back to someone and ask questions, and there’s plenty of opportunities for a team member to teach me something new. Paul Ambro, our Technical Customer Support Manager, has helped me grow professionally and is a great teacher. He’s helped me learn to step back and really see what’s happening so that I can reorganize my strategy. 

What is your favorite thing about SnapStream?

The flexibility. I was uprooted from Houston and had to move. It was a quick decision for my family and I didn’t have a lot of time to think about my career. When I told my manager, I asked to stay on for a month remotely so I could work on finding another job. He came back and gave me 2 months, then later on decided to keep me on as a remote worker. Having that safety net of keeping my job and knowing that the company valued me enough to keep my position was huge for both my family and I. Other companies have offered me positions since I have moved, but I feel an overall sense of loyalty since SnapStream went out of their way for me. 

What do you like to do when you aren’t at SnapStream?

I love sports and all things Aggie. I dabble in the art of slow-pitch softball, but my true passion is fueled by my incredible ability to “escape”. I currently have won 49 out of 50 escape rooms in 4 different states, with the one failure being chalked up to a friend’s lack of slide puzzle skill. Otherwise, I keep a full schedule chasing around my 2 elementary-aged kids and being used as their personal trampoline. 

Feature Friday: Meet our Interns!

It’s Feature Friday, and this week we’d like to introduce you to our summer interns! Since 2011, SnapStream has recruited 2-4 outstanding students to work with our Engineering Team during the summers. They work as developers on their own projects and bug fixes (no coffee runs here!) and are truly part of the team, adding valuable contributions that actually end up being used in our products. Even though we aren’t able to have daily nerf gun wars with this year’s interns as we have transitioned to working from home during COVID-19, we have had an awesome time getting to know each of them and are grateful to have them as a part of our team this summer!

Wenqi is a CS and Math graduate from The University of Texas at Austin and will be going to UCLA for grad school this upcoming fall. Outside of school, she enjoys cooking and exploring new restaurants. Her favorite cuisines are Italian food and Asian food, and she is currently working on making handmade fettuccine after many failed attempts. She also loves taking walks, biking and paddle boarding during sunny days. One other fun fact about her is that she can do a cartwheel.

Ruiye is a master student at UT Austin majoring in Operations Research & Industrial Engineering. He did his undergrad in Mechanical Engineering, then switched to ORIE, and is now doing a software engineering internship with us! He loves football and basketball and his favorite teams are the LA Rams, Texas Longhorns, and the LA Lakers.

Daniel is a Master of Computer Science student at Rice University. Before studying at Rice, he spent 2 years at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for his first master’s in Civil Engineering. He likes to play computer games, including GTA5, Watch Dogs, Civilization, or Metro. He’s not much of a sports guy, but he does occasionally play badminton.

Happy Feature Friday! Meet Daniel, our rock star in sales: 

How did you find SnapStream? 

When I graduated from Rice in 2002, I honestly didn’t have particular career aspirations. I ended up back at Rice in the Ecology department as a lab technician. I had friends who studied computer science, and one ended up with a position at SnapStream. My lab tech position was based on a grant that was expiring, so I decided to connect with SnapStream and was hired in technical support. 

What is your role here?

Pre-sales engineer

How have you grown with SnapStream?

I’ve definitely grown alongside our products. I didn’t have a background in the corporate world or in technical support, so I really had to learn and figure things out as I went along. I learned how to develop rapport with customers, but as we grew, the support team needed more structure. In 2013 I became the support manager, and in 2018 I moved over to pre-sales engineer. I never expected to work in sales, but I really enjoy it and love talking to people. I feel that my real area of growth has been learning how to jump into conversations with people I don’t know and being able to communicate effectively. 

What is your favorite thing about SnapStream?

It’s a small company and there are a lot of opportunities to be creative. Basically, if you want to do something, you can do it. There’s not a lot of bureaucracy or roadblocks that could stop you from accomplishing something. 

What do you like to do when you aren’t at SnapStream?

I’m a semi-professional musician as I’ve played in rock bands for about 20 years. I also used to be a music critic for the Houston Press, Austin Chronicle and Houston Chronicle. I’m in a heavy metal band in Houston called Omotai and I have a project in Austin called Mister Smile. I call my Austin project a fake jazz band, we play mostly rock improv.

It’s time for another #FeatureFriday, and this week we are celebrating Lorena from Accounting! This month marks her second year anniversary with the company. 

How did you find SnapStream?

This job was actually given to me as I started at SnapStream as a temporary hire through an agency. I ended up being a good fit, so I was super excited to become a full-time employee with the company. The environment here has been awesome since day one, so I knew this is the place I wanted to be. 

What is your role here?

Accounting Clerk

How have you grown with SnapStream?

BOY have I grown! I’m still a college student, so this is my first full time office job. I’ve done some data entry jobs before, but I’ve never been given the opportunity to organize and provide the numbers as useful information to coworkers. My presentation and social skills have definitely improved here as I’ve learned how to showcase information. My supervisor, Josie, has taught me so much and fills in what my college education isn’t covering. 

What is your favorite thing about SnapStream?

Honestly, the people and the opportunity of growth that SnapStream has given me. The accounting team has grown from one person to three people, so it’s been awesome to be a part of a growing team and evolve with the company. The flexibility that SnapStream has offered with me being a student has been great, it’s easy to find a good student life and work balance. 

What do you like to do when you aren’t at SnapStream?

I love to hang out with my two dogs (Nanuq and Muffin) and my new kitten (Nicholas). I got Nicholas this past May, and he’s adorable because he’s still learning how to use his claws correctly. Since quarantine began, I’ve made it a point to go out into nature often and take walks.

Welcome to #FeatureFriday where you can get to know members of the SnapStream team! Today, we are featuring Zach Douglas from QA:

How did you find SnapStream?

I first saw the job posting on online recruiting sites, but I was drawn to apply when I read about the company culture on the SnapStream website. I was looking to move to Houston from Austin, and SnapStream had a similar culture to the companies I was familiar with. 

What is your role here?

Quality Assurance Engineer

How have you grown with SnapStream?

I’ve grown a lot professionally as I’m working with a different type of technology from what I have been exposed to before. It’s been eye opening to learn how the broadcast world works. 

What is your favorite thing about SnapStream?

We have a relaxed and low-stress environment here. Everyone knows each other and we work really well together.

What do you like to do when you aren’t at SnapStream?

I love watching movies and going to shows, walking our dogs Monkey and Maya, and discovering Houston restaurants. I also used to own a record store in Austin, so I enjoy adding to my record collection.

Meet Team SnapStream - Marlon in Quality Assurance

Welcome to the second edition of Meet Team SnapStream, where we introduce you to the people behind the scenes. Today we're talking to Marlon Dait, QA Tester, who has been at SnapStream for just over 2 years.

What is a QA Tester?

Marlon: First of all, QA is not question and answer, it's Quality Assurance. Which means making sure that our product can be used by a wide margin of people. People using different operating systems, different browsers, etc. Making sure our product works in any environment.

We have to do a lot of back and forth with the developers, testing out their code. If it isn't working the way it should, we have to work with them to remedy that, and if it works we pass it off as fixed.

 

Background:

Marlon: This is my first dive into the QA field. Before SnapStream, I worked in a general IT position. I fixed issues on computers or wrote simple macros scripts in Visual Basic. When I first got here, my manager gave me a few books on how to QA and how to QA better.

I realized that a lot of the QA work flow is something I identify with, so it was a natural progression to go from IT to QA. A lot of the skills transferred over with ease.

The best thing about being a QA Tester:

Marlon: Being a QA tester in itself is great, but being a QA tester at SnapStream is amazing. The atmosphere is incredibly relaxed. It's great to have a team around you that knows how to do things and has arcane knowledge of our product's past.

The environment is also great because it's a nerd accepting culture.  I don't have to hide that I like to go to Renaissance Festival!  It's an accepting culture for anything that you want to nerd-out on, from Pokemon to Football. 

Favorite SnapStream Feature:

Marlon: So, I actually use our product quite a bit... I think the term is called "eating your own dog food". It's where you use your own product yourself. We test on a lot of the clips we record, so clipping out sections of recordings is something I do a lot. I'll notice a particularly interesting or funny clip, and I like to share it with my friends.

For instance, I was testing out MP4 playback to make sure there were no artifacts in the recording, no out of sync issues or skipping. I have to watch the file through to it's entirety, making sure it works, time shifting around, etc. I came across a teaser for a news segment talking about the dangers of flip-flops (there's a lot of flip-flop wearing here at SnapStream).

I just had to clip this out and share it with my friends.

Clip and share is my favorite SnapStream feature because you grab things instantly, right in the moment and share them immediately. 

SnapStream hosts monthly, company-sponsored outings. What's your favorite non-work, work function?

Marlon: There are so many great things we do. The most recent company outing we had was Painting with a Twist, which was really cool. They gave us wine and food and they had great music! We also had a Top Golf outing, which was fun even though I don't play golf. I just channeled my inner Happy Gilmore.

My name is Eric and I'm the Customer Success Specialist here at SnapStream. What the heck is a Customer Success Specialist? Great question!
